One of my “resolutions” is to be more intentional about reaching out to both of my grandmas on a weekly basis. One of my favorite topics to talk about with my Grandma Bryan is her experiences in motherhood and being married to my Pap. For those of you who don’t know, my Grandma and Pap Bryan had 10 kids. My Pap Bryan had his own business, and my Grandma worked within the home (reminder – TEN children).
We were recently discussing Valentine’s Day and she shared that it was one of their favorite holidays and that it was actually the day she tended to miss him most. Every year she puts a valentine in a plastic bag and places it on his grave. While my Pap was living and working, my Grandma explained that on Valentine’s Day she would put a valentine under my Pap’s coffee cup in the morning. When I asked why she put it there specifically, she explained that my Pap was constantly working to support them, and half the time he didn’t know what day it was, so the valentine would serve as a subtle reminder that he “better come home with something!”
I immediately laughed because if you know my Grandma, you’re probably not surprised by this. My Pap was truly one of the most hardworking people you’d ever meet (same with my Grandma). I’m grateful to say that my husband reminds me a lot of my Pap, constantly working to support our family in whatever capacity he can. If you know Justin, you know he tends not to need the reminders, but to pay a little homage to my Pap and Grandma, today Justin’s valentine was placed by the coffee maker (his first stop of the morning). I explained the significance, and he agreed that we should make it a tradition.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all those who celebrate, however you celebrate! xoxo.
